During England ’s Victorian era, the calling card was an important social requirement. A gentleman or a lady would present a card to a servant when arriving at someone’s home. It was proof of refinement. Failure to present a card would have been considered extremely poor taste. Often, a Victorian gentleman would ask a woman to dinner or to the theater by leaving his card. If she wished to accept or decline the invitation, she could do so by writing a note on her own card.
